Breast Reconstruction

The procedures for Breast Reconstruction are varied and patient specific. They range from a simple expander/implant reconstructive technique through the more complex TRAM (transverse rectus abdominus muscle) flap reconstruction. Other procedures are available depending on whether your mastectomy was performed along with plans for post operative radiation therapy. Such an example being a Latissmus Dorsi muscle flap combined with an implant.

Additional reconstructive procedures available include procedures for reconstruction of the nipple and areolar complex of the breast as well as procedures to match the unoperated breast to the same size and shape of the newly reconstructed breast. These include a possible reduction mammoplasty or a mastopexy procedure (breast lift procedure).

The reconstructive procedures usually start at the time of the mastectomy. Some may be delayed for a period of time after the mastectomy, to allow for appropriate chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.

Again, I must stress that these procedures are patient specific and all steps regarding the reconstructive surgery is planned out in advance with the patient and her general surgeon. I would like to see you before your planned general surgery procedure in order to present you with the options available. After this discussion we would decide if the reconstructive procedure would begin immediately, i.e. at the same time as the mastectomy, or on a delayed basis. I would be discussing these options with your operating general surgeon and oncologist. Breast reconstruction can be done at any time interval after your mastectomy. Even if you had a mastectomy many years ago you are still a candidate for breast reconstruction.

These procedures are performed under a general anesthetic and frequently on an outpatient basis. The initial mastectomy and the TRAM flap method of reconstruction require a two or three day hospital admission. The expander/implant reconstruction, as an example, is usually an outpatient procedure.
