I perform a Breast Augmentation Mammoplasty to increase the size of the breasts. I utilize the McGhan style 468 implant. It is a silicone-textured shell implant that is filled with sterile normal saline. The implant is frequently referred to as the "anatomical implant" due to it's teardrop shape; more filling in the lower half, that gives an anatomic curved appearance to the lower portion of the breast. I prefer placement of the implant in the submuscular space, behind the pectoralis muscle of the chest. This gives an additional layer of coverage between the implant and the overlying skin. It is felt to make later mammograms easier to interpret as well as contribute to a more natural shape and feel to the breast.
The age for this procedure is from the late teens upward. I perform this procedure under general anesthesia, on an outpatient basis.
